On Thursday, Trump's team [took an unusual position]( in response to Jack Smith’s motion to move the start of the classified documents trial from August to December of this year, with Trump's lawyers telling Judge Aileen Cannon there was no need to set any trial date at all. (Smith [wasted no time shredding the defense position]( and denying this request.) In another filing from Thursday, Trump's lawyers tried to head off Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis by attempting to have her [disqualified from investigating him](. Meanwhile, the grand jury for the Fulton County election interference probe was seated this week, meaning a charging decision could be [reached in a matter of weeks](weeks, not mere days or many months, if the timeline). Congressional Republicans created no shortage of chaos this week as well, including a [theatrical Jim Jordan-led hearing Wednesday]( into the "weaponization" of the FBI, the House Freedom Caucus [severing ties w]([ith Marjorie Taylor Greene](, Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville's [unprecedented blockade]( of U.S. military promotions [over his abortion view]( (in addition to his [controversial comments about white nationalists](), and the [narrow passage]( of a contentious defense spending package which brings the military to [the frontlines of the GOP's culture war]( in new and dangerous ways, with restrictions on abortion access, transgender care, and diversity training.
