House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer wants to frame Republican probes as impartial. He has his work cut out for him. [VIEW IN BROWSER]( MSNBC DAILY Understand today's news [VIEW IN BROWSER]( MSNBC DAILY Understand today's news Feb. 1, 2023 THE LATEST [Alternate text] [The GOP's uphill struggle to prove its Biden investigations are legit]( by Hayes Brown Wednesday marks the real beginning of House Republicans' efforts to bury President Biden and his administration under an avalanche of time-wasting probes. This debut performance of the newly empowered majority will surely be a preview of the next two years — and just how seriously the public should take their version of "accountability." Rather than begin this first round of investigations with a subject that only the far-right fringe would latch on to — like, say, Hunter Biden's laptop — House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer has chosen federal pandemic spending, a topic aimed at the kind of sensible, fiscally conservative, suburban voter Republicans used to target as their primary audience. But polling suggests it's going to be an uphill climb for Comer. This is a preview of Hayes Brown's latest article. [Read their full column here](.     TOP STORIES [Alternate text] [ALEX S. One of the most controversial things he’s done is sign the Individual Freedom Act, also known as the “Stop W.O.K.E Act,” short for Stop Wrongs to Our Kids and Employees. The law, among many things, prohibits teaching certain concepts related to race. Although there’s currently an injunction against the law, its implementation had far-reaching consequences for students and professors alike. Jonathan Cox is an assistant sociology professor at the University of Central Florida. He faced a tough decision last fall. Cox, who is the only Black professor in his department, could either teach two courses that would explore colorblind racism, “Race and Social Media” and “Race and Ethnicity,” or cancel his classes. He had to choose the latter option of cancelling some of his courses because of DeSantis’ law banning the teaching of critical race theory. Cox joins WITHpod to discuss the circumstances that led him to change the courses he taught last semester, the importance of inclusive spaces that encourage constructive debate, the effect of anti-CRT laws on his students and more.     [Image] [Image] 30 Rockefeller Plaza New York, NY 10112 [PRIVACY]( | [CONTACT]( | [UNSUBSCRIBE](listvar=sub_daily) [PRIVACY]( | [CONTACT]( | [UNSUBSCRIBE](listvar=sub_daily)
