"What happened to the Republican Party is no mystery," [writes Noah Rothman](. "The GOP knows it has a Trump problem." But knowing the problem and fixing it are two different things — especially when "Trump can convince his fellow Republicans that the GOP will suffer even worse losses if they abandon him." Already, [says Rothman](, Trump's acolytes are pushing the fiction that the party establishment, not Trump, is the problem. The reality, of course, is that a Trumpified GOP is worse "for both party and country." But unless more Republican voters reject self-destruction in 2024, the burden of rescuing the party falls to its leaders.
