As [Jarvis DeBerry explains](, victims of storms like Hurricane Ian are already set up for failure: A dozen homeowners insurance companies have left Florida since 2020, and at least nine have pulled out of Louisiana in the last couple of years, as disastrous storms have intensified. The result is skyrocketing insurance rates and yet another literal cost of climate change. And as more insurance companies "are falling into insolvency and leaving their policy holders stranded," the problem will only intensify. "America is facing a conundrum," DeBerry [writes](. "Make insurance too cheap and people will build homes in places that are more likely to be destroyed. Make it too expensive and people who already call such places home will struggle to survive."
