What if there was a way to make police in America pay for their misconduct? [View in browser]( [Image]( April 23, 2021 [A photo of a police officer kneeling on and handcuffing a Black young man] What if there was a way to make police in America pay for their misconduct? This is a literal question that MSNBC columnist Zach Stafford poses. His answer: Require police officers to enroll in liability insurance. Citing research by law professor Deborah Ramirez, who has been pushing for similar legislation, Stafford suggests that just as medical professionals pay higher insurance fees with every malpractice suit, police officers should be required to pay into a system wherein more citations and complaints mean higher fees coming out of officers’ personal funds. If premiums get too high, an officer with risky behavior and too many complains would essentially be priced out out law enforcement. “When it comes down to it, money makes the world go round,” Stafford writes, “and that applies to cops, too.” Or at least it could. They discuss the reforms activists hope to see next, and what it’s been like covering this case as Black journalists. Trymaine also sits down with Tiffany Crutcher, whose brother Terence Crutcher was shot and killed by police in 2016. They talk about how the families of people who have been killed by police are working together to push for greater accountability and a system that brings us closer to justice.
