From the small (forgetting the eggs on the counter) to the large (backing the president's lies about election rigging), nobody is infallible. What matters, as we teach children from a young age, is what you do afterwards. Some Republicans in the aftermath of the attack on the Capitol last week have condemned the violence. Others have called on the president to resign. What we've yet to have, though, is a mass apology from many of the party leaders for helping drag the country to the brink. Not from senators who voted to acquit President Donald Trump last year. Not from the House Republicans who rejected President-elect Joe Biden's Electoral College win. And not from Vice President Mike Pence, who after years of sticking by Trump was at the Capitol during the attack the president incited. "Thereâs been no real mea culpa, let alone atonement for their partyâs willingness to accept, defend, and spread Trumpâs self-serving lies," Brown writes. "Until that time, there can be no actual healing and recovery, only empty pablum."
