Bernie Sanders may have withdrawn from the Democratic presidential race, but he is pledging to[use his campaign]( to push for more progressive policies in the party’s platform. Sanders’ exit leaves Joe Biden as the presumptive nominee to face off against President Donald Trump in November. The stakes of that race grow higher as criticism of the [Trump administration’s handling]( of the coronavirus pandemic continues to mount. Wednesday was the [deadliest day yet]( for the United States, with nearly 2,000 deaths between Tuesday and Wednesday. The number of recorded coronavirus cases in the U.S. is nearing half a million. There is also [worrying data]( that African Americans are [much more likely to die]( from COVID-19 than whites. The prevalence of pre-existing conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure is part of the reason, but [structural racism]( and [economic]([inequality]( are also major factors. Amid hopes that social distancing and stay-at-home orders are flattening the curve (though New York counted a record 779 new deaths on Wednesday), President Trump seemed eager to declare victory and move on.
