The group of lawmakers Trump has been criticizing includes Reps. Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ayanna Pressley. [View in browser]( [Image]( JULY 15, 2019 The four progressive congresswomen of color [responded to attacks by President Donald Trump]( at a joint news conference Monday, saying his “blatantly racist” assault on them is nothing more than an effort to distract from his corrupt administration and inhumane policies. The Democratic lawmakers, Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, condemned Trump's treatment of migrants on the border and deportations. "This is the agenda of white nationalists, whether it is happening in chat rooms or happening in national TV. And now it's reached the White House garden," Rep. Omar said. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez said, "I am not surprised" by the president's actions, given the actions she said he's taken against immigrants and to hurt the average American. "This president operates in complete bad faith," Ocasio-Cortez added. "He does not know how to defend his policies, so instead he attacks us personally. That’s what this is all about.” She added that she and her colleagues aren't going anywhere. "We don't leave the things we love," Ocasio-Cortez said, and "we love all people in this country." To America's children, she had a message: “No matter what the president says, this country belongs to you.” [Read more from from NBC's Dareh Gregorian and Adam Edelman.]( [Image]( Brendan Smialowski / AFP - Getty Images Trump started tweeting about the four congresswomen shortly after their press conference was scheduled to start. Earlier Monday, Trump [escalated his attacks,]( falsely accusing the elected officials of loving terrorists and "hating" the United States and Israel. "IF YOU ARE NOT HAPPY HERE, YOU CAN LEAVE!" he wrote in the first of three tweets, which were posted before the four took to the podium. "This the president of the United States doing this and taking comfort in 'Lots of people think what I'm saying,'" said Neal Katyal on [The Beat with Ari Melber](. "This is not a defense and it fundamentally disqualifies him from being president of the United States. He is in such a war with our constitutional values... This is the land of Little Rock and Selma, of Dr. King, of Abraham Lincoln... of the Declaration of Independence. And the president doesn't get any part of that." [On The Rachel Maddow Show](, Rep. Ilhan Omar told Maddow that Pres. Trump is “corrupt,” “inept,” and “the worst president” America has had. [For MSNBC's Chris Matthews](, President Trump amplified his racist language from “dog whistle to bugle call.” "What the president's done here is yet again — I think he did it after Charlottesville and I think he did it, frankly, when he was pushing the birther lie about President Obama — he has joined Andrew Johnson as the most racist president in American history," said presidential historian [Jon Meacham on Hardball](. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to America's children ([Video]() Opinion [OPINION.]( AOC isn't Nancy Pelosi's problem. Trump is, and he keeps proving it. Trump’s racism is vile, but the fact remains that Pelosi paved the way for Trump to make his racist, nativist statement, and it was an unforced error on her part. By [Anthea Butler](. [OPINION.]( My editorial cartoon satirizing Trump and the border crisis went viral. Then I lost my job. Editorial cartoons have never been more important, and with social media, they have an increasingly broad reach. In a sense, they are a more powerful tool than they have ever been. Newspapers are cutting one of their best assets when they are at their most vulnerable. And in turn, democracy is losing one of its most treasured safeguards. By [Michael de Adder](.
