[View in browser]( [Image]( JULY 12, 2019 [Image]( @JoshDawsey Vice President Mike Pence [saw firsthand]( the extreme overcrowding migrants are often forced to endure at federal detention centers when [he visited two Friday in Texas](. [Video]( showed detainees packed into their holding areas surrounded by chain-link fence, the concrete floors littered with silver thermal blankets. There were roughly 384 people men there “in caged fences with no cots,” and “the cages were so crowded that it would have been impossible for all of the men to lie on the concrete.” Some of the men in there apparently said they’d been there “40 days or longer.” The Washington Post's Josh Dawsey, the [pool reporter accompanying the vice president](, described the facility as smelling "horrendous." A group of men detained behind chain link fencing shouted to news cameras, "No shower, no shower!" Pence said afterward that what he saw was evidence of a "system that was overwhelmed." On her show, [Rachel Maddow explained](: "It should be noted that the crowding is not an organic phenomenon. Those 400 men are crowded into that cage because that's how the Trump administration is holding them... Presumably, the reason they sent the vice president to see it with a pool reporter, is because they like what they are doing there. ...Because presumably, they think this helps them politically, to be seen to be treating immigrants this way. Like animals, in pens, lamented for their smell and how unwashed they are when they're being held in outdoor portals with nothing to lie down and nothing to clean themselves with for 40 days of a stretch. The Trump administration inarguably has created this scenario... and now they are showing it off." Testimony by former special counsel Robert Mueller will be delayed one week as a longer Capitol Hill appearance is negotiated, the House Judiciary Committee and the House Intelligence Committee announced Friday. Mueller had been scheduled to testify publicly before the committees this coming Wednesday about his two-year investigation into Russian attempts to influence the 2016 election and possible collusion and obstruction by President Donald Trump. The testimony will now take place one week later, on July 24, and is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. [As NBC's Alex Moe and Rebecca Shabad point out that]( "the hearings will occur just two days before the House is expected to go on a six-week recess, giving Democrats little time for any immediate post-hearing action on Capitol Hill." The conspiracy-theory-ridden summit eventually devolved to the point of a "Playboy" reporter and said former top White House adviser huffing and puffing their chests out at one another like chimpanzees, which freaked out one Secret Service agent, even as all other agents avoided becoming memes. By [Matt Laslo](. [OPINION.]( Justin Amash is wrong: We don't need to get rid of political parties, we need more of them. Amash is right: The two-party system is indeed in a “partisan death spiral.” But Amash’s solution of simply rejecting any party identification and bashing partisanship is as impractical as his limited-government libertarianism.
