MAY 31, 2019
It was an eventful week that saw Robert Mueller break his silence, with decidedly mixed results.
Â
For her part, Speaker Nancy Pelosi likes to talk about the numbers to defend her go-slow approach to launching a formal impeachment process against President Donald Trump.
"I think it's like 35 of them out of 238, maybe its 38 out of 238, have said they wanted to be outspoken on impeachment," Pelosi said at a Commonwealth Club of California Wednesday.
Â
But as [Jonathan Allen writes on NBCNews.com](, "there are strong signs that the pro-impeachment forces in the House are both larger than she portrays â and growing."
Â
Over 50 House members favor starting an impeachment inquiry, [according to a list maintained by NBC News](.
Â
The figures don't count a group of Democrats who say they will vote to start impeachment proceedings if Trump continues to defy subpoenas for witness testimony and documents from House committees.
Â
"I wasn't there even a week or two ago, but I'm at a point where 'enough already,'" said Rep. Tom Malinowski on the Last Word Friday.Â
Â
"I've concluded that the rule of law in this country can survive bad people trying to violate it, but it can't survive the hesitation of good people to defend it. If people are being ordered not to obey lawful subpoenas, if the Justice Department is being turned into a political weapon against the president enemies... at some point, you have to stop screaming about it... It's a difficult dilemma for us... but at the end of the day, in the face of these kinds of offenses against the rule of law, there has to be an institution in Washington that is willing to say that there is a line that cannot be crossed. "
A Missouri judge issued [a temporary restraining order]( Friday, prohibiting the state from shutting down its last abortion clinic in St. Louis.
State officials rejected the clinic's license renewal, following a [statewide ban on abortion that was passed last week](. The closing of this clinic would have made Missouri the first state without access to abortions since 1974, the year after the Supreme Court passed Roe v. Wade.
The judge's order allows the clinic to continue offering abortion services until their court hearing next week.
Cecile Richards, former president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and co-founder of Supermajority, a women's political action group, joined Chris Hayes
Friday night to discuss.
Â
âItâs outrageous, itâs cruel. Iâm very hopeful that weâll get good news next week, but this is terrifying for the more than 1 million women of reproductive age that live in the state of Missouri,â Richards told Hayes.
Â
Although support for Roe v. Wade is higher than it has ever been, Hayes noted that the Supreme Court landmark decision is at risk of being overturned both directly and through regulatory burdens that inhibit access to abortion services.
âIt is an all-out assault,â Richards said, âThis is not a drill, this is no longer an intellectual question, Roe is absolutely at risk and so is the healthcare and the wellbeing of millions of women in this country.â
âWhat do you do about it?â Hayes asked her.
âYou vote,â she replied.
DEVELOPING NEWS: Twelve people were killed and six others injured Friday after [a shooter opened fire at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center in Virginia](, officials said.
Â
Responding officers shot the suspect, who also later died, Virginia Beach police Chief James A. Cervera said at a news conference. The suspect was described by the chief as a "longtime" employee of the city. The shooting, he said, was indiscriminate.
Â
The suspect recently purchased multiple firearms legally, a federal official told NBC News. A motive has not been determined.
Â
Mayor Bobby Dyer said, "This is the most devastating day in the history of Virginia Beach."

Quote of the Day
[âWe are a nation of broken gun laws. ... We see violence in the United States at a rate that we do not see anywhere else in the civilized world, and to deny the fact that our laws are broken is simply pure ignorance on behalf of politicians who would say such.â](
