And Speaker Johnson’s government funding plan hits roadblock [VIEW IN BROWSER]( MSNBC DAILY Understand today's news [VIEW IN BROWSER]( MSNBC DAILY Understand today's news Sunday, September 15, 2024 IN CASE YOU MISSED IT [Alternate text] Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump came [face-to-face]( for the first time on Tuesday during ABC’s [presidential debate]( in Philadelphia. Harris and Trump sparred over topics including [abortion](, [immigration]( and the [economy]( over the course of the 90-minute debate. An estimated [67.1 million people]( tuned in — with 6.4 million viewers in the age 18 to 34 bracket. Now, [Trump has said he won’t debate Harris again.]( Trump couldn’t avoid wading into conspiratorial waters during the debate, bringing up baseless social media rumors about Haitian immigrants in [Springfield, Ohio](, and lying about how they are “eating the pets of the people that live there.” Local officials have repeatedly refuted these claims, which have [wreaked havoc]( for Springfield residents. Haitian residents there are facing harassment and threats, and several town buildings, including an elementary school, have been evacuated due to bomb threats. Back on their tour of battleground states, Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, are emphasizing [messages of unity.]( In response to the Springfield conspiracy, the crowd at [Walz’s Michigan rally]( on Thursday broke into chants of “we’re not eating cats.” Also on Tuesday night, pop superstar Taylor Swift [officially endorsed]( Harris in an Instagram post, while taking a jab at Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance, in the process. Meanwhile, Trump has been traveling with white nationalist [Laura Loomer](, a conspiracy theorist who’s claimed Sept. 11 was an “inside job” and is too extreme for even Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga. Hours after their debate, Trump and Harris shook hands at a [9/11 commemoration]( in New York that President Joe Biden also attended. Harris and Biden, and later Trump, visited the home of the Flight 93 memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, later that day. Missed something? Don't worry. Here are our select columns and videos from the week. And don't forget to check out [MSNBC.com]( for more.     UNDERSTAND MORE [Alternate text] [SOFIA NELSON]( [I used to be friends with JD Vance. Here's what happened to him.]( Unlike the MAGA movement, which is led by a candidate who is defiantly amoral, post-liberalism is steeped in a revolutionary religiosity. [Read more.]( [MOLLY JONG-FAST]( [This one line from the Trump-Harris debate offered a brutal reminder to American women]( Harris used the power imbalance to be powerful, baiting Trump and using the optics of a woman standing up for herself to her advantage. //link.msnbc.com/click/36739571.72335/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubXNuYmMuY29tL29waW5pb24vbXNuYmMtb3Bpbmlvbi9rYW1hbGEtaGFycmlzLW5vdC1hLXNvY2lhbGlzdC1yY25hMTY2NjM3P2NpZD1lbWxfbWRhXzIwMjQwOTE1JnVzZXJfZW1haWw9ZDdkYzc0NTE3Mjk3YjM5NzFhYTE0ZDZmMzMxMTM1YTA4NzhmOGY2NDBmYTFhMTAxOWYxNTdiNjVjMWI1ZGQxZA/58292da26e4adc7b0b8b4914Cb84b2682//link.msnbc.com/click/36739571.72335/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubXNuYmMuY29tL29waW5pb24vbXNuYmMtb3Bpbmlvbi90aW0td2Fsei13aGl0ZS1ndXktdGFjb3MtaGFycmlzLWNhbXBhaWduLXZpZGVvLXRydW1wLWFubi1jb3VsdGVyLXJjbmExNjc2Nzg_Y2lkPWVtbF9tZGFfMjAyNDA5MTUmdXNlcl9lbWFpbD1kN2RjNzQ1MTcyOTdiMzk3MWFhMTRkNmYzMzExMzVhMDg3OGY4ZjY0MGZhMWExMDE5ZjE1N2I2NWMxYjVkZDFk/58292da26e4adc7b0b8b4914B6407f4a5//link.msnbc.com/click/36739571.72335/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubXNuYmMuY29tL29waW5pb24vbXNuYmMtb3Bpbmlvbi90aW0td2Fsei13aGl0ZS1ndXktdGFjb3MtaGFycmlzLWNhbXBhaWduLXZpZGVvLXRydW1wLWFubi1jb3VsdGVyLXJjbmExNjc2Nzg_Y2lkPWVtbF9tZGFfMjAyNDA5MTUmdXNlcl9lbWFpbD1kN2RjNzQ1MTcyOTdiMzk3MWFhMTRkNmYzMzExMzVhMDg3OGY4ZjY0MGZhMWExMDE5ZjE1N2I2NWMxYjVkZDFk/58292da26e4adc7b0b8b4914C6407f4a5//link.msnbc.com/click/36739571.72335/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubXNuYmMuY29tL29waW5pb24vbXNuYmMtb3Bpbmlvbi90cnVtcC10cmFkaW5nLWNhcmRzLW5mdC1hbWVyaWNhLWZpcnN0LXJjbmExNjg5OTk_Y2lkPWVtbF9tZGFfMjAyNDA5MTUmdXNlcl9lbWFpbD1kN2RjNzQ1MTcyOTdiMzk3MWFhMTRkNmYzMzExMzVhMDg3OGY4ZjY0MGZhMWExMDE5ZjE1N2I2NWMxYjVkZDFk/58292da26e4adc7b0b8b4914Bf4d24ca8//link.msnbc.com/click/36739571.72335/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubXNuYmMuY29tL29waW5pb24vbXNuYmMtb3Bpbmlvbi90cnVtcC10cmFkaW5nLWNhcmRzLW5mdC1hbWVyaWNhLWZpcnN0LXJjbmExNjg5OTk_Y2lkPWVtbF9tZGFfMjAyNDA5MTUmdXNlcl9lbWFpbD1kN2RjNzQ1MTcyOTdiMzk3MWFhMTRkNmYzMzExMzVhMDg3OGY4ZjY0MGZhMWExMDE5ZjE1N2I2NWMxYjVkZDFk/58292da26e4adc7b0b8b4914Cf4d24ca8//link.msnbc.com/click/36739571.72335/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubXNuYmMuY29tL29waW5pb24vbXNuYmMtb3Bpbmlvbi9oYXJyaXMtdHJ1bXAtZGViYXRlLXNleGlzbS13b21lbi1yY25hMTcwODkwP2NpZD1lbWxfbWRhXzIwMjQwOTE1JnVzZXJfZW1haWw9ZDdkYzc0NTE3Mjk3YjM5NzFhYTE0ZDZmMzMxMTM1YTA4NzhmOGY2NDBmYTFhMTAxOWYxNTdiNjVjMWI1ZGQxZA/58292da26e4adc7b0b8b4914Ef4580294[R]([ead more.](//link.msnbc.com/click/36739571.72335/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubXNuYmMuY29tL29waW5pb24vbXNuYmMtb3Bpbmlvbi90cnVtcC10cmFkaW5nLWNhcmRzLW5mdC1hbWVyaWNhLWZpcnN0LXJjbmExNjg5OTk_Y2lkPWVtbF9tZGFfMjAyNDA5MTUmdXNlcl9lbWFpbD1kN2RjNzQ1MTcyOTdiMzk3MWFhMTRkNmYzMzExMzVhMDg3OGY4ZjY0MGZhMWExMDE5ZjE1N2I2NWMxYjVkZDFk/58292da26e4adc7b0b8b4914Df4d24ca8//link.msnbc.com/click/36739571.72335/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubXNuYmMuY29tL29waW5pb24vbXNuYmMtb3Bpbmlvbi9rYW1hbGEtaGFycmlzLW5vdC1hLXNvY2lhbGlzdC1yY25hMTY2NjM3P2NpZD1lbWxfbWRhXzIwMjQwOTE1JnVzZXJfZW1haWw9ZDdkYzc0NTE3Mjk3YjM5NzFhYTE0ZDZmMzMxMTM1YTA4NzhmOGY2NDBmYTFhMTAxOWYxNTdiNjVjMWI1ZGQxZA/58292da26e4adc7b0b8b4914Jb84b2682//link.msnbc.com/click/36739571.72335/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubXNuYmMuY29tL29waW5pb24vbXNuYmMtb3Bpbmlvbi9rYW1hbGEtaGFycmlzLW5vdC1hLXNvY2lhbGlzdC1yY25hMTY2NjM3P2NpZD1lbWxfbWRhXzIwMjQwOTE1JnVzZXJfZW1haWw9ZDdkYzc0NTE3Mjk3YjM5NzFhYTE0ZDZmMzMxMTM1YTA4NzhmOGY2NDBmYTFhMTAxOWYxNTdiNjVjMWI1ZGQxZA/58292da26e4adc7b0b8b4914Lb84b2682 [JARED HOLT]( [A dubious Facebook post became a racist Trump meme.
