This enormous concentration of power in a small number of companies is bad news â it means less privacy, less choice and less control for consumers. Fortunately, a proposed law in the UK has the potential to put people back in control. It’s called the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill. It grants new powers to the UK’s competition regulator to put people first. The bill strengthens consumer protection and aims to introduce greater competition and innovation online by regulating the power of big tech companies like Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta and Microsoft. The bill is days away from passing its next big hurdle, with a vote in the House of Commons scheduled for 30 April. But predictably, big tech companies have been pushing back â seeking to dilute the law’s impact and protect their monopoly positions. To prevent the bill from being weakened at the last minute, we need to come together NOW to create public attention and pressure. Since then, changes have been made which weaken the law. In its strongest form, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill will: - Give the regulator new powers to take on the most powerful tech companies. They would be able to stop gatekeepers from blocking their competitors and give consumers more choice over their internet experiences, like which browser they want to use.
- Address unfair practices like fake reviews and online subscription traps by giving the regulator new powers to rein in these types of bad business practices.
- Give the UK its own powerful version of the EU’s recent Digital Markets Act, with the flexibility to address future developments in technology (such as new AI products) without needing to update law. It’s no surprise that big tech companies are not reacting well to the possibility of more accountability and greater competition. The law has the potential to introduce real competition, innovation and choice, but proposed changes to the text risk watering it down and giving big tech scope to delay and weaken these benefits. And without sufficient public pressure, UK lawmakers might give in to Big Tech’s demands. Collectively we must show MPs the vast amount of public support out there for a free and open internet where consumer choice is protected and people are in control, not big tech companies. And here in the UK, this starts with the passing of the Digital Markets Competition and Consumers Bill in its strongest form.
