Yesterday, U.S. Senator Ed Markey sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission calling for an investigation into the data collection practices of car companies – and he credited Mozilla’s research that exposed all the ways that modern cars are a privacy nightmare. So, what kind of data are we talking about? Last year, Mozilla’s *Privacy Not Included buyer’s guide uncovered the fact that major car manufacturers are collecting – and in some cases selling – extremely personal data, including your genetic information and sexual activity. Yesterday – thanks to the Mozilla community raising awareness on this issue – Sen. Markey put car company CEOs on the record by making them respond to the privacy concerns that resulted from Mozilla’s research. This research is made possible by generous donations from people who want to hold companies accountable for their data practices. And today is an important time to show that we are all together in that effort. [Can you make a $25 contribution to Mozilla today? Markey’s letter: “As Mozilla reported in a devastating investigation last year, cars are ‘the official worst category of products for privacy that we have ever reviewed.’ Due to the growing concern with these data practices, in December, I requested that the major automakers answer questions about their data collection, use, and disclosure practices.” This is a huge step forward, and none of it would have been possible without our Mozilla community coming together to take on major car companies for their appalling data collection practices. The car industry is just one of many places where our privacy is at risk, which is why Mozilla recently launched our Privacy for All campaign to put privacy protections into law in the U.S. Right now, we have car companies on high alert after exposing their problematic handling of personal information. And that kind of pressure is going to set the stage for how we win privacy protections across the board. The truth is that there is still much more work ahead of us in order to guarantee our personal information is protected. But it is going to require all of us in the Mozilla community to make it possible. [Can you make a $25 contribution to Mozilla to demand accountability from companies that misuse our data? Any amount you can give will make a big difference.]( Thank you for all you’ve done to advance this campaign, and all you do for the internet.
