Sign the petition to cut off Fox News' biggest source of funding. [Tell cable companies: Stop funding Fox News with our cable bills.]( Dear MoveOn member, Breaking: Fox "News" has agreed to pay Dominion Voting Systems nearly $800 million in a blockbuster lawsuit settlement over Fox News' 2020 election lies.1 This incredible rebuke of Fox's lies is the largest settlement in media history, signaling the beginning of a reckoning for its endless stream of right-wing propaganda masquerading as news.2 But as historic as this outcome is, we need much, much more. The settlement amounts to only about a quarter of Fox News' profits from last year alone.3 If we're going to break its stranglehold on our politics, we need to fundamentally undermine Fox News' whole business model. The biggest share of Fox's revenue—$4.2 billion—comes from cable companies paying to carry Fox's cable channels to their subscribers, so that's the critical pipeline of cash fueling Fox News' lies.4  [Let's get the cable companies that include Fox News in their packages to stop funding Fox—sign the petition now!]( Demand your cable service provider make Fox News channel optional! [Sign the petition]( Fox News' secret to profitability is convincing cable companies to pay it a big cut of every subscriber's monthly fees, regardless of whether you watch Fox News' hateful programming. So cable subscribers who oppose Fox's lies with every ounce of their being might be unknowingly contributing $20 a year to line its pockets.5 A few dollars a person, multiplied by millions of subscribers, adds up—again, cable fees account for the biggest portion of Fox News' revenue.6 And it's why the channel been insulated against the stampede of advertisers fleeing the shows of hosts like Tucker Carlson and Lou Dobbs, who spew white supremacist attacks. And there are signs that those fees are being renegotiated quietly even while the Dominion settlement is in the headlines.7  For decades, Fox's MO has been putting right-wing talking points ahead of any journalistic standard. But we could be on the precipice of a key turning point in that business model. Fox lost a lot of money in the Dominion settlement. But its brand is worth way more than it'll pay Dominion. If we can make this admission that it knowingly lied about the 2020 election stick to Fox's reputation, we can make it as radioactive to do business with as it deserves. [Sign the petition demanding cable carriers stop funding Fox.]( The Dominion settlement means we won't get to see Fox bigwigs like Rupert Murdoch and Tucker Carlson take the stand under oath in a trial. By settling in the moments before starting its trial, Fox avoided an even more painful reckoning that would have seen its most prolific liars testify under oath, and possibly result in a verdict worth twice as much. But the absence of an even bigger judgment must not overshadow how significant this moment is. And this is far from the end of Fox's headaches—there's an even bigger defamation lawsuit against the corporation, brought by another voting company, that's moving forward; and investors are potentially suing the board for breaching its legal responsibilities by allowing the company to open them to such lawsuits.8 What happens in courtrooms and boardrooms may not be up to us. But we can do our part to make sure that $787 million is the beginning and not the end of the cost that Fox pays for damaging our democracy.
