In an explosive hearing of the January 6 committee on Tuesday, we not only learned chilling new details about Donald Trump's involvement with the deadly white supremacist insurrection, but also that his allies have been actively working to intimidate witnesses into lying to the committee during their depositions. Dear MoveOn member, In an explosive hearing of the January 6 committee on Tuesday, we not only learned chilling new details about Donald Trump's involvement with the deadly white supremacist insurrection, but also that his allies have been actively working to intimidate witnesses into lying to the committee during their depositions.1 The coup attempt that Trump began in 2020 is not over. He and his allies are threatening witnesses to undermine the effort to discover the truth of what happened in the lead-up to January 6, while at the same time maneuvering behind the scenes to take over the administration of elections in battleground states so that come 2024, they will be able to enact their plan and install Trump back into the White House. We cannot let that happen. Our democracy hangs in the balance. That's why MoveOn has developed a strategic plan for the midterm elections that will focus the energy of millions of MoveOn members toward key races for secretary of state, governor, and seats in Congress that will ensure that Trump does not have the power to steal an election and that Democrats have the majorities they need to pass desperately needed legislation to protect our democracy. [This is the biggest midterm election campaign in MoveOn's 23-year history, but it will only be successful with your help, {NAME}. Can you chip in $3 now?]( During Tuesday's hearing, we also learned that key people in Trump's orbit, including chief of staff Mark Meadows and advisor Rudy Giulliani, knew in advance that January 6 would be a violent riot, but no one did anything to stop it.2 Trump himself was informed prior to his speech at the Ellipse that thousands of those in attendance were carrying guns, knives, brass knuckles, and spears.3His response? "I don't f***ing care if they have weapons, they're not here to hurt me."4 Just moments later, he directed a mob filled with violent, armed white supremacists to march to the Capitol. And for hours afterward, he sat in the Oval Office dining room watching as rioters attacked Capitol police, broke into congressional offices, and prowled the halls looking for Mike Pence, Nancy Pelosi, and other elected officials they meant to kill. And what did Trump do? He sent tweets encouraging violence against Pence, and when he was finally convinced to release a public statement, wanted to include lines about his intention to pardon the rioters.5 We cannot let anyone who was involved with that deadly day, or those that have spent the last 18 months parroting Trump's lies about it, run our government. That means electing secretaries of state in battleground states who will count every vote and not bend to Trump's demands that he be declared the winner no matter what. That means electing governors who will stop the deluge of racist voter suppression laws sweeping across the country, and who will pass laws that protect our right to cast a ballot. That means expanding the Democratic majorities in the House and Senate and demanding that they pass laws that protect and expand voting rights, alongside legislation to codify the right to an abortion, get dangerous weapons of war off our streets, reform the out-of-control extremist Supreme Court, and more. [We can do this, {NAME}. But we have to do it together. Will you chip in $3 now?]( Thanks for all you do. âChris, Allison, Nadia, Corinne, and the rest of the team Sources: 1.
