This time, Trump is laying the groundwork to install himself in the White House in 2024 by building an apparatus of election theft at the state level. Dear MoveOn member, Donald Trump's plan to steal the 2024 presidential election took another big step toward reality last Tuesday when Trump loyalist and Big Lie conspiracy theorist Jim Marchant won the Republican nomination for secretary of state in Nevada.1 Marchant is one of the organizers of the slate of election deniers running to oversee elections while falsely claiming the 2020 election was stolen, and he has said he would have refused to certify that year's election had he been in office.2 Now, if Marchant wins in November, he will be in charge of overseeing elections, counting votes, and declaring the winner of the 2024 presidential election in what is expected to be one of the most decisive battleground states in the country. Big Lie election deniers have also won their party's nominations to oversee elections in Pennsylvania, New Mexico, and Michigan. In a potential Republican wave election, every one of them could win, giving them a terrifying scope of power over our democracy. This is why MoveOn is doing something we've never done in our 23-year history: We've launched a multimillion-dollar effort to defeat Trump-backed secretaries of state across the country and stop Trump's coup in its tracks. Will you donate $5 a month to help stop Trump's Big Lie conspiracy theorists from taking over our elections? [Yes, I'll chip in monthly.]( [No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.]( Trump's attempt to overthrow the 2020 election was stopped only when secretaries of state and other key election administrators refused to bow to his pressure to throw out the election results and declare him the winner. This time, Trump is laying the groundwork to install himself in the White House in 2024 by building an apparatus of election theft at the state level. And he's not hiding it. At his first campaign rally this year, Trump stated outright: "There's a famous statement: 'Sometimes the vote counter is more important than the candidate.'"3 {NAME}, this is not hyperbole. This is how American democracy as we know it could come to an end in 2024. In some years, extremists like this might not have a chance to win a general election. But in a bad political environment for Democrats, we can't take anything for granted. Can you chip in $5 a month to help support MoveOn's campaign to defeat Trump's Big Lie candidates for secretary of state? [Yes, I'll chip in monthly.]( [No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.]( Jim Marchant is an absolutely over-the-top radical. He's a member of the alternate slate of pro-Trump electors still seeking to overturn President Biden's win in Nevada in 2020.4 Marchant said he ran for office at the urging of a prominent QAnon supporter and claimed that Nevada's votes haven't counted for years because, he says, elections are controlled by members of a "deep state cabal" with "power over all our lives."5,6 Meanwhile, Trump loyalists who claim the 2020 election was stolen have won the Republican nomination for secretary of state in Michigan and New Mexico. In Pennsylvania, where the governor appoints the secretary of state, election denier Doug Mastriano has won the party's nomination for governor. That's 47 electoral votes won by President Biden that Trump is poised to steal in 2024. MoveOn has launched a historic campaign to defeat these Trump-backed candidates for secretary of state and elect honest officials who will count every vote and respect the will of the people. But our resources come from you, our members. And we need your help. Will you please chip in $5 a month to help safeguard our democracy and stop Trump's plot to install his cronies as elections officials? [Yes, I'll chip in monthly.]( [No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.]( Thanks for all you do. –Chris, Emily, Emma, Evelyn, and the rest of the team Sources: 1. Donald Trump and his allies are methodically enacting a plan to place some of Trump's most ardent supporters in key election offices that oversee vote counting, have the power to certify—or decertify—election results, and declare election winners and losers.
