Sign the petition demand that President Biden and the U.S. Senate expand the Supreme Court and save abortion rights [The GOP-packed Supreme Court could overturn our right to have an abortion, and if they do, abortion could be restricted in at least 22 states.]( your name now to demand President Biden and Democrats expand the court to protect our civil rights.]( Dear MoveOn member, Abortion bans have been introduced and passed into law nationwide—from Texas to Florida to Oklahoma and beyond.2 These bans are devastating, and unfortunately, these aren’t going to be the first or last attacks on abortion access. Abortion bans are a direct attack on our rights and disproportionately impact Black, brown, and low-income communities, and the Supreme Court's right-wing justices could soon make a decision that will let these laws stand and completely deny abortion access to millions of Americans.3 This summer, the court will decide on Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization—a decision that could ultimately gut Roe v. Wade and leave access to abortion in serious peril across the nation.4 It’s alarming that SCOTUS is even hearing this case, and it’s clear that the GOP-led court is willing to undo decades of protection. Right-wing justices appointed by Donald Trump and enabled by Mitch McConnell and GOP power grabs have created an unfair imbalance on the court. SCOTUS has allowed Texas’s abortion ban to go into place, and it’s clear that the court has an uneven bias to it.5 That’s why MoveOn is demanding that the Supreme Court be expanded. President Biden must appoint new justices and expand the court in order to rebalance it against the stolen seats and unprecedented right-wing power grabs—and, in doing so, help fight for abortion rights, voting rights, regulations on corporate power, and so much more. Many Americans will be outraged by these decisions—but Democrats actually have power to do something to reform and rebalance the court. Demand that President Joe Biden and the U.S. Senate expand the Supreme Court now and protect abortion rights. [Sign the petition]( Senate and House Democrats have introduced the Judiciary Act of 2021, and Democrats in both houses must sign on to this legislation and pass it immediately. This bill would expand the seats on the court and, ultimately, protect the right to choose and ensure that the nation’s highest court is built fairly, which could lead to less bias when making important constitutional rulings.6 This court that's been packed by right-wing power grabs has lost its legitimacy. Its level of respect among Americans is at an all-time low—and no wonder: The right-wing justices, appointed by presidents who received a minority of the vote, confirmed by Republican senators representing a minority of Americans, and confirmed through rushed and partisan processes, have made it their effort to rewrite rights and laws supported by the vast majority of Americans. And this spring, as they seek to expand gun ownership and gut the ability to rein in climate change, they are also aiming to end 50 years of abortion protections. The Supreme Court has been wrong before: They failed to strike down slavery, institutionalized "separate but equal," upheld Japanese internment camps, handed the 2000 election to President Bush without due process, and much more. And Republicans have rigged the system to set us up for more unjust decisions. The stakes couldn't be higher: The impacts of gutting abortion protections will be felt immediately, and this imbalanced court could entrench GOP power for decades if they weigh in on more elections and district maps.
