Now, eyewitness Scott Johnston has come forward and told the January 6 committee that, in fact, the White House was in on it from the start. According to Johnston's testimony, Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson spoke to insurrection leaders on the phone before the rally and urged them to march on the Capitol. They also directed them to "make it look like they went down there on their own" so that Trump wouldn't be personally implicated in the violence.3 But instead of being held accountable, Mark Meadows wrote a best-selling book.
