Trump recently announced that he's launching a new social media app, ridiculously called "Truth Social." The app will launch in Apple's App Store to "invitees" this month and to the public in early 2022. Dear MoveOn member, Donald Trump has found a way around the bans on his social media accounts. Yes, that's right: Trump is coming back to social media. And it's thanks to Apple?! Trump recently announced that he's launching a new social media app, ridiculously called "Truth Social." The app will launch in Apple's App Store to "invitees" this month and to the public in early 2022.1 Facebook and Twitter banned Trump from their platforms after the deadly January 6 insurrection over concerns that his posts might cause more violence. And now Apple is bringing him back. It's outrageous and dangerous. And we can't let it happen, {NAME}. Already, 200,000 MoveOn members have signed a petition calling on Apple and CEO Tim Cook to drop Trump's app from the App Store. But we need your help to turn up the heat on Apple and keep the pressure on for as long as it takes. Will you start a $5 monthly donation right now so we can move forward with a delivery of the petition to Apple and keep the pressure on Apple and other media giants to deny Trump the megaphone that he so desperately wants in order to regain his dominance over our national discourse and stage his political comeback? [Yes, I'll chip in monthly.]( [No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.]( Trump built his political brand on social media. It was his megaphone. And he has used social media for years to spread lies, racism, misogyny, xenophobia, antisemitism, homophobia, transphobia, and so much more. The current attacks on election results, disinformation about COVID-19 vaccines, and threats against school board members can all trace their origins back to Trump's use of social media. Apple asserts that its core values include "diversity and inclusion" and that "the company ensures that all its operations are in line" with its core values.2 There is absolutely no excuse for Apple to give Trump and his new social media app a platform. This isn't the first time Apple has been in the hot seat: Ten years ago, amid public outrage, Apple took down a terrible, anti-LGBTQ+ app that dehumanized the LGBTQ+ community and promoted the use of conversion therapy.3 Other tech companies have done the right thing and stopped Trump from spreading lies and inciting violence on their platforms. Apple can and must do the right thing as well. It's up to us, {NAME}, to come together against hate and lies. But, to be honest, donations to MoveOn have dropped sharply since Trump left office. We'll be able to dedicate more of our budget to go big to pressure Apple to drop Trump's new app and put pressure on other media giants to deny Trump the megaphone he so desperately wants only if we close our budget shortfall. Can you chip in $5 a month to help power this work—aimed at Apple, other media giants, and ultimately as an electoral strategy to keep Trump from further building his political base to win the White House in 2024? [Yes, I'll chip in.]( [No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.]( Thanks for all you do. –David, Amanda, Allison, Eric, and the rest of the team Sources: 1.
