Abortions were already out of reach for many people marginalized by our society and in red states. But now? It's outrageous and frightening—it's just like "The Handmaid's Tale," only it's real life in states across America. Dear MoveOn member, After 48 years, the Supreme Court is poised to overturn the right to safe and legal abortion across the United States.1 On Monday, defying the lower courts, the expanded conservative majority on the Supreme Court—with Donald Trump's appointee Amy Coney Barrett now firmly planted in Ruth Bader Ginsburg's seat—agreed to hear a case concerning a Mississippi law that bans abortions after 15 weeks.2 And yesterday, Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed into law a bill banning abortions at as early as six weeks—before most people even know they that are pregnant.3 {NAME}, think of the implications. Abortions were already out of reach for many people marginalized by our society and in red states. But now? It's outrageous and frightening—it's just like "The Handmaid's Tale," only it's real life in states across America. We have to fight back by passing a federal law that will finally guarantee abortion rights and access for all. But the only way that we can do that is by electing more progressives to the House and Senate. And right now, Democrats are poised to lose seats in the 2022 midterm elections.4 MoveOn has big plans to couple our grassroots organizing strength with cutting-edge technology to help progressives win critical seats in 2022. But our resources come from members like you, {NAME}, and we need your help right now to put our plans into action. Will you chip in $5 a month to help elect more progressives to Congress in the midterm elections and protect access to abortion for all? [Yes, I'll chip in monthly.]( [No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.]( Since 1946, the sitting president's party has lost, on average, 27 House seats in midterm elections.5 There were just two elections during that time that were exceptions, when the sitting president's party gained small numbers of seats.6 The Democratic margins in the House and Senate are already the slimmest in modern American history—just five seats in the House and a single seat in the Senate. Plus, reapportionment following the census is expected to give Republicans additional seats, and Republican dominance in state legislatures will enable them to redraw congressional maps prior to the 2022 elections even more in their favor.7,8 The bottom line, {NAME}, is that we are in trouble. To protect abortion access and win the 2022 midterms, we need your sustained help. Will you chip in $5 a month to stop Republicans from winning the House and Senate and help elect more progressives to Congress? We must do this to protect abortion access across the United States. [Yes, I'll chip in monthly.]( [No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.]( The truth is that donations to MoveOn—and across the entire progressive movement—have plummeted since President Joe Biden took office. Meanwhile, the GOP is raking in money from its billionaire fat cat donors. Democrats are getting complacent under the Biden administration, while the right wing is executing plans to make abortion illegal, manipulate congressional maps, and strip away access to voting. {NAME}, we have to fight back. Will you join us by starting a $5 monthly donation to MoveOn today? [Yes, I'll chip in monthly.]( [No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.]( Thanks for all you do. –Chris, Gabi, Evelyn, Emily, and the rest of the team P.S. Abortion is still legal in all 50 states. But a highly organized network of extreme politicians bent on taking away our rights, including to self-determination, has successfully chipped away at them for decades. It's time to fight back and fight forward. [Please make a $5 monthly donation to MoveOn today.]( Sources: 1. "Supreme Court to Hear Abortion Case Challenging Roe v.
