Having Amy Coney Barrett on the Supreme Court through the 2050s and beyond—which is a very real

Having Amy Coney Barrett on the Supreme Court through the 2050s and beyond—which is a very real possibility—should be alarming to every American concerned with progress. Dear MoveOn member, Yesterday’s confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett to a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court is terrifying. There’s no way around that, but we have exactly one week to make sure every eligible voter has a plan to vote—and this movement needs your help breaking through the political noise to talk to people one-on-one. Republican Party leaders once again demonstrated that they’re happy to openly embrace their own hypocrisy and destroy the processes and institutions that have grounded our country for hundreds of years—all in order to grab more power for themselves, trample our civil and human rights, and hand over more power to big corporations and the wealthy. Having Amy Coney Barrett on the Supreme Court through the 2050s and beyond—which is a very real possibility—should be alarming to every American concerned with progress. Amy Coney Barrett is an ideological ultraconservative, and her Supreme Court votes stand to undo decades' worth of work on issues such as reproductive justice, marriage equality, immigrant and workers' rights, and corporate power. Her views on these kinds of issues will likely make her among the most conservative justices in modern Supreme Court history. We know that appealing to the better nature of Republicans simply does not work. Our only option is to vote them out and reclaim our power and our democracy. [We can’t just sit by and let the right wing complete their hostile takeover of our systems of government. We need to act now. Click here to join thousands of volunteers and sign up to phone bank for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, so that we can have a resounding victory in this election once all the votes are counted.]( The way we’ll start to undo the damage wrought by Republicans’ packing our courts is by electing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris next week. And once we do that, we can immediately begin putting pressure on the new administration to embrace far-reaching, substantial court reform. While Justice Barrett is here to stay, we can—and must—rebalance the Supreme Court to more fairly and democratically represent the will of the American people. We must also rebalance the federal judiciary more generally. Throughout the final years of Barack Obama’s presidency, Mitch McConnell blocked votes on hundreds of federal judiciary seats, holding them empty until a Republican president could take office and fill them. And once Donald Trump won in 2016, he did exactly that. Now, virtually all levels of the federal court system are stacked with far-right, extremist Trump appointees with lifetime terms. If Republicans continue their undemocratic, corrupt takeover of our courts, there’s no telling how regressive our country will get. That’s why we have to elect Joe Biden president and ensure that both the Senate and House are controlled by Democrats, if we want to restore the balance—and integrity—of our courts and our democracy. Make no mistake: What’s at stake is the very future of our democracy, as well as a wide swath of rights that so many have fought for over the years. [That’s why we need your help now: Can you commit to a phone banking shift for Biden and Harris? Phone banking is fun, easy, and an effective way to communicate directly with voters in battleground states.Â]( And don’t worry if you haven’t phone banked before: You’ll receive all the training and guidance you need at the link above. Thanks for all you do. –Chris, Brieanna, Mohammad, Arvin, and the rest of the team Will you support MoveOn's efforts to win this election? The MoveOn community will work every moment, day by day and year by year, to resist Trump's agenda, contain the damage, defeat hate with love, and begin the process of swinging the nation's pendulum back toward sanity, decency, and the kind of future that we must never give up on.
