Donald Trump just commuted Roger Stone's prison sentence after Stone was convicted of lying to Congress to cover up for Trump corruption. Dear MoveOn member, Donald Trump just commuted Roger Stone's prison sentence after Stone was convicted of lying to Congress to cover up for Trump corruption. Stone—Trump's longtime "self-proclaimed dirty trickster"—had been sentenced to 40 months in federal prison after he was found guilty on seven felony charges, including witness tampering and lying to Congress while under oath.1 The charges were brought by special counsel Robert Mueller as part of his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Trump's despicable commutation of a close friend and political ally's sentence represents the latest in Trump's disgraceful history of blatant corruption and abuse of power.
Enough. Nobody is above the law. [On November 3, let's end this corruption. Rush a $3 donation today to end Trump's lawless presidency and defeat his GOP enablers.]( This isn't the first time Trump has flouted the law and abused the office of the presidency to benefit himself and the thugs who supported his campaign. In 2017, Trump pardoned the notoriously racist former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was a vocal supporter of Trump's 2016 campaign. Arpaio had been found guilty of criminal contempt for ignoring a court order to stop illegally targeting and terrorizing Latino families.2 In 2018, Trump pardoned former Dick Cheney aide Scooter Libby, who had been convicted of obstruction of justice, perjury, and making false statements to investigators during George W. Bush's time in office.3 And who can forget when Trump ordered White House aides to defy subpoenas, interfered in the Mueller investigation, and obstructed official congressional impeachment hearings? Stone's commutation isn't just another instance of Trump doling out help to rich and powerful friends. It's Trump doling out help to himself. Stone made it very clear that he was breaking the law to shield Trump from criminal investigators, knowing that Trump was the only person in the world with the power to prevent him from ever facing any consequences. And four months out from another election, it's a signal that Trump will let people get away with anything in his name, so long as he stays in power. So we have GOT to make sure he doesn't get the chance to steal this election. [Let's end Trump's despicable lawlessness. Rush a $3 donation today to ensure we defeat Trump and his GOP enablers.]( Trump's corruption makes clear that there are two systems of justice: one for the rich and powerful, and another for everyone else. In one system of justice, the wealthy and well-connected, like Trump's friends, act with impunity. In the other system of justice, everyone else is met with harsh penalties. Especially people of color. Take, for example, the 2008 Great Recession. For years, Wall Street bankers and executives engaged in criminal activity that resulted in one of the greatest economic calamities in our nation's history. The global economy was left in shambles, and millions of Americans lost their life savings, their jobs, and their homes. The Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, which investigated the causes of the meltdown, concluded that the mortgage lending industry was rife with "predatory and fraudulent practices."4 Yet federal prosecutors filed no criminal indictments against major banks or senior bankers related to the crisis.5 While corporate criminals go free, those without money and influence are severely punished. In 2011, for instance, Kelley Williams-Bolar, a Black mother, was harshly sentenced to jail time and three years probation for allegedly falsifying records so that her two daughters could attend a better school.6 And while the wealthy have entire teams of high-paid lawyers to help them evade punishment, immigrant children facing deportation have no right to counsel and are regularly forced to represent themselves in court.7 We must end this two-tiered system of justice. This November, we can take an important step by sending Trump and the GOP packing, electing Joe Biden, and ensuring we have a president and attorney general dedicated to fair and equal justice for all. But if Trump has shown us anything, it is that he will use every tool and power he possesses to benefit himself and his cronies—which means we need a campaign powerful enough to beat him and win big, invest in measures to help Americans vote safely, and build out a response plan if Trump defies the will of the voters and discredits or obstructs the elections. We're already investing in that work, even as we need to invest heavily in the voter turnout that will lead to a blue wave to wash him and his enablers out of office—but that's fighting on multiple fronts at once, and for that we need resources.
