[Mouths of Mums]( [Mouths of Mums - Click here to visit our webpage]( Longing to belong: why every child deserves to fit in How have your kids settled into the swing of 2022? We’re all crossing our fingers that this year will be more settled and our kids will get the chance to see their mates, go on excursions and play sport just like it was not so long ago (although it feels like a lifetime!). All of these things help our kids feel a sense of belonging. Like they’re part of something bigger, no matter what differences they may have. Because every child is different, but they long to belong. To fit in. Every kid has their quirks. Some are class clowns, others prefer to dissolve into the background. Some children are absorbed in a world of gaming, others love curling up with a good book. But no matter where each child’s individuality takes them, there’s usually a tribe of other kids just like them. School is a melting pot of differences, and most kids feel like they belong somewhere. Most kids. But not all. Some kids can’t fit in at all, but it has nothing to do with their likes and dislikes. It’s because they’re the one in six Australian children and young people who are living in poverty. Every day they slip further and further away from the kids they want to be like, because their every day isn’t just about assignments and who to play with. It’s about the hunger pangs in their belly. Or the fact they can’t go on the excursion next week, because there’s no money in the family budget. Just imagine feeling nervous as you approach the school gates, knowing you’re not wearing the correct uniform, and that you have no pencil case or stationery. It’s honestly heartbreaking to think of any child in Australia missing out on the simple pleasures of childhood. At a time when they should be carefree and happy, they’re wondering how they’ll ever make friends, when they don’t fit in. And the impact of living in poverty for kids stretches so very far. On average, children growing up in disadvantaged homes are up to three years behind their more advantaged peers. It’s like a domino effect, with their worries piling up day after day. Every child should have infinite potential to succeed, only limited by their effort, not their circumstance. At MoM we know how lucky our kids are. It’s why, every year, we partner with The Smith Family to help spread the word on supporting the kids who aren’t as lucky as ours. We know that every day we don’t help Australia’s disadvantaged kids is another day they fall further behind. The Smith Family tirelessly works to make sure Aussie kids aren’t missing out on the chance to learn, be confident and have a better future. This is how we stop kids missing out… [Poverty In Australia Can Create Heartbreak At Back To School Time]( Poverty is a vicious cycle that can span generations. But there are stories of hope. Like Susan’s incredible journey that’s a tangible example of just how powerful The Smith Family’s sponsorship program really is. When her youngest child was born with autism, the single mum went from full time employment to being a stay-at-home mum, struggling to make ends meet. But she knew she had to keep her kids motivated to keep going to school, to stop them slipping through the cracks. âBeing part of The Smith Family has really encouraged them. Now they realise why school is important. Itâs their path to a better lifeâ. You can read more [about Susan’s incredible story here]( >> The Smith Family also brings hope and joy to the lives of sponsors, like Marianne … [The Smith Family Feb 22 2 -email-header-]( After a family tragedy, that could have seen Marianne’s children descend into a life of poverty, Marianne decided to make a difference to lives of Australian children. And in turn, it’s changed her life. After her husband’s sudden death, Marianne’s was left to raise two small children on her own. But what stopped their lives from spiralling into poverty was the fact she was financially secure. Now a psychologist, she’s seen the impact of poverty first hand, and discovered through The Smith Family that she could help kids in a real way. She now proudly sponsors two students facing challenges at home and school. âNot having basic things to fit in, like the right school shoes, can affect a childâs self-esteem. It can make it hard for them to pay attention and learn,â she explains. âBut when a student can walk into school in proper full uniform, they can feel good. They know âIâm part of this, I have a right to be hereâ. Take some time to read our [full story on Marianne and her sponsor journey here]( >> Above everything else, every child just wants to fit in.
