Valentino Rossi dodges a MotoGP bullet

However, I think Valentino Rossi was too busy with a faceful of Franco Morbidelli’s flying Yamaha to have too much time to reflect on his amazing existence! Crashing on the 180mph approach to Turn 3 at the Red Bull Ring is one of the worst places in world motorsport to go off. I had a flashback of my own, as Morbidelli’s and Johann Zarco’s bikes flew towards the apex of the bend where the factory Yamaha riders were just turning in, to Nick Heidfeld’s F1 Sauber slamming into Takuma Sato’s Jordan there in 2002. With no carbonfibre survival cell to protect them, had either Rossi or Maverick Vinales taken a direct hit, the consequences would have been grave. MotoGP stays on in Spielberg for another race there this weekend – I just hope the riders take care of one another, as Rossi rightly suggests.
