When it comes to women in motorsport, the overriding feeling I have is annoyance that for every great trailblazer – from Pat Moss, Maria Teresa da Filippis, Michele Mouton, Janet Guthrie, Lella Lombardi, Jutta Kleinschmidt through to Danica Patrick – we haven’t seen the next wave of talent to come through. Instead of their prominence being the catalyst for a new wave of female racers, I’d have to say it’s only really in top-level U.S. drag racing where it’s truly become the norm. It currently has women in all four of its classes, and has Shirley Muldowney to thank for breaking the gender barrier in the 1960s. Key to that was Muldowney’s regular successes – winning Top Fuel titles in 1977, 80 and 82. The NHRA can boast double figures of women who’ve won at its highest levels in recent years, and I can only see that trend continuing. Good on them! So there’s empirical proof for argument that says until women are regular, proven winners in high-level motorsports, then that true snowball effect won’t follow on. I know a lot of people wince at the new W Series concept, shouting “segregation isn’t what we need” – but my reply would be at least it gives a platform to prove their talent. In an ideal world, we’d have a ton of Ana Carrascos tearing up the world’s circuits, but it’s simply not the case. Is this new initiative ideal? Probably not. Yet someone had to do something, so let’s give it a chance.
