Genius. There, I’ve said it. Daniel Ricciardo has proved himself, once again, a bone fide overtaking genius. I’ve covered racing all around the world, and it’s been a privilege to see the top exponents of the sport – whether it’s single-seaters, sportscars or touring cars – and you get a wide spectrum of what makes a great overtaker across these varied genres. That Ricciardo is doing this in F1 is all the sweeter; his overtaking prowess is now second to none. The way he ambushes his rivals from so far back, yet still makes the apex, is utterly sublime. And his bravery to do it at the first opportunity – surely he could have DRS-ed past Valtteri Bottas a minute later in Shanghai – is awesome to behold too. I often thought Lewis Hamilton the best overtaker in the business, but I’m totally swung in Ricciardo’s favour now. PS: An honourable mention to IndyCar’s Sebastian Bourdais!
