Bravo Lewis Hamilton. He’s executed a fantastic Formula 1 World Championship campaign, and swatted away a stronger-than-expected challenge from Ferrari in a more-difficult-to-drive-than-supposed Mercedes to equal Sebastian Vettel (not to mention Alain Prost!) on four world drivers’ titles. While we can salivate at the prospect of whether it's Hamilton or Vettel who first makes it to five, I believe there’s a third element in the frame for the 2018 crown. Max Verstappen is now a three-time Grand Prix winner. Aided by the Vettel/Hamilton first-lap skirmish, he made Sunday’s Mexican GP look ridiculously easy – by comparison, Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen looked decidedly second-rate. If Red Bull – and, perhaps more appositely, Renault – can give Max a reliable and fast platform next year, he’s a genuine World Championship threat. Not convinced? Well, who’s scored the most points in the last four races, in spite of that penalty in Austin? Hamilton 70, Vettel 42, Verstappen 80. I rest my case.
