Regrets are the poison of life. And after a Japanese Grand Prix in which Lewis Hamilton took a straightforward (but well-earned) step towards a fourth World Drivers’ Championship, you could sense plenty of remorse elsewhere in the Suzuka pitlane. Nowhere more so than Ferrari. Even its own spark plugs have turned against Sebastian Vettel’s dissolving title hopes, and while teammate Kimi Raikkonen’s demons were self-imposed (practice crash, grid penalty, early off-course excursion) you had to feel sorry for Vettel’s latest painful race exit. It must have been tempting to throw something – or someone – under the bus, but Vettel sucked it up. After all, self-pity is only good for wallowing in. The upcoming American leg can be its springboard to recover its self-esteem, even if its title aspirations are now likely over.
