[Support our nonprofit journalism]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter]( March 11, 2024 Before today, I had been vaguely aware of the [conspiracy theories surrounding Kate Middleton](. Was she dead? Did she undergo a plastic surgery procedure worthy of MI5-level privacy? I didn't have the energy to give these questions much thought. Who would when there's [Hunter Harris' treatment]( of the new Anne Hathaway movie to howl over? But my previous apathy for Kate Middleton theories instantly warped into intense intrigue this morning after the Princess of Wales herselfâat least, we're told it was Kateâ[posted]( on social media to explain [that Mother's Day photo](. You'd think that would settle things down for a bit. But as typical of matters concerning the Royal Family, a gene pool seemingly alien to basic human connection, Kate's apology seems to have backfired spectacularly. [From my colleague Julianne McShane](: None of this has stopped the conspiracy theorists from speculating on Kateâs well-beingâand, frankly, itâs hard to stop, if our newsroom chatter is anything to go by. The Royals have a long history of behavior towards women, and other dissenters within their ranks, that has been described as abusive. Let me be the first to say that none of this is meant to wish harm on the woman (in fact, as Julianne points out, much of the public concern seems to be focused on genuine concern for Kate's well-being, given the history she pointed out above). As my colleague Tim Murphy put it, we, too, genuinely hope Kate is well. But we also hope the Allisters working public relations for this family continue screwing this up.
