The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Support our nonprofit journalism]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter](     March 5, 2024 The Biden administration's decision in January to [halt funding]( for the United Nations agency responsible for Palestinian refugees has pushed the UNRWA, the only organization with the capabilities to deliver life-saving assistance to Gazans, to the "breaking point." If that sounds like hyperbole, trust me, it is not. Today my colleague Noah Lanard has a [searing report on the catastrophic chain of events]( that have happened since the US's announcement, and how the move [fulfilled]( one of Benjamin Netanyahu's long-held goals: Netanyahu and others in Israel have long hoped to get rid of the UNRWA, which they see as a reminder to the world that, under international law, millions of Palestinians are refugees who have a right of return to their former homes. The United States has long supported the agency, contributing [more than $7 billion]( since it began operations in 1950, but even Israeli officials were reportedly surprised by how quickly the US pulled its backing. All while Netanyahu openly defies the White House's push for more aid to enter Gaza as it sits on the brink of famine. Reading Noah's piece today, it's impossible not to think about the images and reports of human suffering: [people eating donkey feed](, [bloodstained diapers](, children [clamoring for food]( with pots and pans amid acute malnutrition. Set that against the US's move to airdrop food to the region this weekend, a "surreal" step as Noah writes, considering the aid is intended for the very [people the US is helping to starve](. —Inae Oh Advertisement [House Bookshop Ad]( [Top Story] [Top Story]( [How the Biden Administration Kneecapped the Most Essential Aid Group in Gaza]( UNRWA has been pushed to its “breaking point” after "rash" decisions by the US and its allies.
