The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter](     February 7, 2024 When Mike Johnson emerged from relative obscureness to become second in the presidential line of succession, I was largely amused. How can such a painfully boring-looking fellow hold such [extreme]( and [dangerous]( views! Since then, I haven't paid too much attention to Johnson—until this week. My renewed awareness comes thanks to the bungled GOP effort to oust Department of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas in what would have been the first impeachment of a cabinet leader since 1876. As my colleague Isabela Dias wrote, [House Republicans fell short of the historic push]( after four Republicans joined Democrats in voting against the resolution. That failure further evinces two things: even a handful of Republicans are seemingly willing to admit that this whole thing was plotted in bad faith; Johnson, who also failed to secure aid to Israel on Tuesday, isn't good at this. I was amused, but once again, only briefly. House chaos in the hands of extreme Republicans isn't exactly cheery stuff. But as I've said before, I'll take the light when I can. —Inae Oh Advertisement [Antioch University]( [Top Story] [Top Story]( [Republicans’ Plot to Impeach DHS Secretary Mayorkas Flops]( “Republicans simply do not want to participate in government.
