The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter](     January 24, 2024 Donald Trump's march toward the Republican presidential nomination is, as my colleague Abby Vesoulis noted from New Hampshire last night, [making history](: The twice-impeached former president facing 91 felony counts, Abby writes, is the first Republican in an open, competitive primary season to win in both Iowa and New Hampshire since 1976. Yet for all the records smashed, Trump's sprint to victory as a flailing Nikki Haley vows to stay in the race feels numbing. A desensitized person, me, would even call it boring if it weren't so equally horrifying. So it's under this heady dread that I learned that Jon Stewart is returning to The Daily Show, where he'll host [Monday nights and for the duration of the 2024 election](. Implicit in that scheduling is the notion that Stewart will offer something valuable to this election cycle. I'm not so sure. Stewart was at the top of his game in the 2000s and early 2010s. He skewered an America that had seen the lies and plunder of the Bush era and then turned his ire to Fox News during Obama's tenure. Stewart's analysis has seemed less trenchant in the Trump era, if not [outright misguided](. So in 2024, do Americans really have an appetite for self-serious gotcha moments wherein a famous white man treats voters who don't vote the way he does with such sneering condescension? That kind of comedy, for me, hits like a relic, something instantly outdated and naive.
