The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter](     January 18, 2024 Donald Trump can't seem to behave in a courtroom. We saw it last year, when he [stormed]( out of court after a judge refused to toss his $370 million civil fraud trial brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, as my colleague Russ Choma reported at the time. We saw it last week, when he [lashed out]( at the same judge during closing arguments of that trial—prompting the judge to, once again, request that Trump's lawyer "control your client." And we saw it again yesterday. This time, Trump was effectively told to shut his mouth after he loudly complained in front of the jury during the proceedings of what essentially amounts to the penalty phase of the $10 million defamation lawsuit filed against him by writer [E. Jean Carroll.]( Here's what happened yesterday in court, [according to my colleague Russ](, after Trump repeatedly called the trial a "witch hunt" and a "con job" while Carroll took the stand: District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who is overseeing the trial, warned Trump he needs to keep his mouth shut. “Mr. Trump has the right to be present here. That right can be forfeited, and it can be forfeited if he is disruptive, which is what has been reported to me,” Kaplan told Trump’s attorneys. Kaplan then turned to Trump, telling him he didn’t want to have to kick him out of the coutroom. “I would love it, I would love it,” Trump responded. “I know you would,” Kaplan told him. “You just can’t control yourself in this circumstance, apparently.” “You can’t either,” Trump snapped back.
