More reporting is critical right now.   [Mother Jones]( MoJo Reader, I’ll be short and to the point today, because it seems like a [less is more]( approach is best right now. We still have a quite significant $245,000 in [year-end donations]( to raise over the next 12 days. And with fewer people paying attention to the news—and the astonishingly high-stakes (and high-stress) 2024 election—we’re finding it harder to raise as much with these emails as we have been lately. Straight up: We need people like you, people who are still paying attention the news and are hungry for the type of journalism the moment demands, to consider [supporting our work]( if there’s any way you can right now. We can’t afford to come up short on our budget, and we can’t afford to come up short when it comes to throwing everything we can at doing the hard-hitting, democracy-protecting reporting you expect from us next year. [Please help if you can](. Especially because next year is going to be unlike any other. The [election]( of course, but also for us at Mother Jones. We’re going to be able to do so much more reporting in exciting new ways, as [our merger]( with The Center for Investigative Reporting takes shape—all with more impact and less overhead. And that’s critical right now. Here’s why: The digital revolution has forever changed how news is created, delivered, and paid for, and investigative journalism is at greatest risk. The few commercial news organizations that can still afford to do it are turning to paywalls to make ends meet—an important business model, but also one that excludes a significant share of the population. So quality news and information is becoming more expensive, but the disinformation that floods our feeds is free. You can see the problem. And I’m so glad that together with you, we can be part of the solution. We can push back against the forces that cheapen journalism with independent, in-depth reporting because we’re [funded primarily]( by readers like you. And this kind of no-nonsense reporting is going to be needed more than ever next year. That means we have to pick up the pace and make sure we don’t end up coming up short on our $350,000 goal when it’s too late to do anything about it. So please [pitch in if you can afford to part with even just a few bucks]( right now. We used to be more nonchalant, thinking that if fundraising struggles, we’ll make it up later. Not anymore. There is zero doubt that the [market]( [forces]( [decimating]( journalism, or any [other]( [number]( of [things](, will keep throwing us serious curveballs. And there is no wiggle room in our razor-thin budgets. No back-up, no secret benefactor, no alternative sources of revenue. But there is something far more powerful and durable: You—a community of readers, many of whom [pitch in what they can]( when they can to make it all possible. And as nerve-wracking as it is trusting we’ll be able to [raise the money]( we need in the next 12 days, there’s no way we’d rather have it. If you can, please [support the people-powered journalism you get from Mother Jones with a donation at whatever amount works for you](. And please [do it now]( because every gift matters and we really need to see a strong response to these emails after some slower than expected days this month.
