[GIVE NOW]( [Children's Rights are Human Rights]( Dear Mother Jones Reader, This past Sunday, the world celebrated International Human Rights Day. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a milestone document that proclaims that every human being is entitled to certain inalienable rights. This important document designates all children as the rightful beneficiaries of human rights. The occasion provides all of us with an opportunity to reflect on the urgent need to acknowledge and safeguard every childâs right to survival, protection, and education. Safeguarding childrenâs rights at every stage of their journeyâwithin their home country, in transit as they are crossing borders, and at their final destinationâis at the heart of everything we do at Kids in Need of Defense (KIND). But there is still so much work to do to ensure the values and rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are upheld for all, especially children seeking safety. [That is why, in honor of International Human Rights Day, I am asking you to make a gift to KIND to ensure the rights of unaccompanied children are defended in court and all along their journey to safety.]( [Give to KIND Now]( With the support of caring individuals like you, KIND exposes the plight of unaccompanied children, provides high-quality legal counsel, and sparks meaningful action to strengthen the rights of unaccompanied children. Most recently: - The Biden Administration reached a settlement agreement in a family separation lawsuit that will provide up to 5,000 families forcibly separated by the federal government with access to benefits, like legal assistance, and another chance at protection in the United States. KIND continues to work tirelessly to support this settlement as the largest legal services provider in the country to these families. - I testified on behalf of KIND before a House Foreign Affairs Committeeâs Subcommittee hearing titled âChildren are Not for Sale â Global Efforts to Address Child Traffickingâ about the importance of establishing a child-centric anti-trafficking framework, and the critical need to protect unaccompanied children and uphold their internationally recognized human rights.* - KIND championed the introduction of the Immigration Court Efficiency and Childrenâs Court Act, a groundbreaking bipartisan, bicameral bill. It ensures unaccompanied children receive a fair hearing and alleviates some of the immigration court backlog. Specifically, this bill will provide for specially trained personnel who have experience working with children, require that the Childrenâs Court encourages their full participation in their proceedings, and provide greater coordination with legal services organizations, which will help children obtain counsel faster and avoid delays in proceedings. These are our collective victories, and we will not stop fighting until the rights of all children are respected and upheld. [I cannot think of a better way to honor International Human Rights Day than to support KIND. With your special gift today, we can give unaccompanied children the legal and social support services they need to thrive at every stage of their journey to safety.]( Thank you for everything you do to protect the rights of unaccompanied children—and set them on a path to healing, hope, and success. Warm regards,
[Jennifer Podkul SIgnature]
