The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter]( November 28, 2023 Today is a big day for me, and itâs not because Iâm a huge fan of [French toast](, [Mars](, the name [Alan](âor because it marks [the anniversary]( of Margaret Thatcherâs resignation. I donât dislike any of those things, but today is special and Iâm guest-writing this intro note because itâs Giving Tuesday, and that helps me do my job: asking the MoJo community to [support our journalism]( with the donations we need to keep charging hard. What do you make of Giving Tuesday? Iâm genuinely curious and you can [let me know here](. It took me a while to [warm up]( to the idea. But when I found out Giving Tuesday started, back in 2012, [explicitly]( to âfight against Thanksgivingâs commercial corruption,â I started to come aroundâthatâs my love language, and quite Mother Jonesian. You can be sure [your Giving Tuesday donation]( will help [fight corruption]( of all sorts, day in, day out. Itâs what we exist to do and can do thanks to being supported primarily by readers. Another great thing about Giving Tuesday: The 92nd Street Y, where the idea got started, made the conscious decision not to brand the day, or run things, as something they owned and controlled. Instead, they made advice and resources available to any nonprofit, and as the national day of giving took off, the publicity and tools benefited the nonprofit sector as a wholeâand was especially helpful for smaller organizations that donât have dedicated fundraising staff or the ability to be seen by a critical mass of donors on their own. Thatâs awesome, and egoless. Less awesome: Iâm looking at north of $350,000 in [online donations]( I need to bring in by the end of December. And Giving Tuesday has never been a huge day for us, but [every single $5, $15, $50 donation matters]( and means a less fraught year-end push for the donations we need. So hereâs an idea: In the spirit of Giving Tuesday, maybe more of you will pitch in this year if we donât make it all about ourselves? My suggestion: [Donate $15 to Mother Jones]( and $15 to another nonprofit newsroom of [your choosing](. The Institute for Nonprofit News makes it [easy to search]( for local, state, or regional outletsâor publications that specialize in a certain topicâand many of them are participating in the annual NewsMatch campaign that will double your gift to smaller newsrooms.
