The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter]( November 22, 2023 Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, a day that theoretically is dedicated to marinating in gratitude over life's blessings. But in the American psyche, it can also exist as something of a metaphorical boxing match among family members to debate politics or that petty insult Aunt Mary hurled in 1997. This year, in some dining rooms, fierce perspectives over the Israel-Hamas war will inevitably prompt heated arguments. Which is why I want to refer you to some of the excellent reporting by my colleagues in recent weeks, the insightful interviews and analysis, as well as this [powerful piece from Bess Kalb in New York]( that I've been thinking about a lot. Because there's no better way to prepare for the potential of conflicting views than by reading testimonies, examining history and context, and keeping your heart open. So here's a brief collection. Since the fighting started, my colleague Noah Lanard has produced a steady stream of wonderful Q&As and reporting on everything from the compelling case for a [democratic one-state solution](, to the fracturing among [young progressives who are deeply disappointed]( in President Biden. In a terrific piece on the dangerous rhetoric of Benjamin Netanyahu, Noah even got Alan Dershowitz on the phone where he appeared to make a [stunning reversal of his previous disgust]( of comparing Palestine to Amalek. I also deeply appreciated nia t. evans' interview with one of the [founders of Writers Against the War on Gaza](. Their conversation, which reflected on the costs of solidarity and the cultural boycott, comes as workers across various industries, from publishing to law firms, pay steep personal prices for speaking out. My newsletter co-anchor, Julianne McShane, has also keyed us into critical updates from the conflict, highlighting the unrelenting horrors of [being pregnant in Gaza]( at this time, as well as the [deaths of reporters]( on the ground. With the details of a hostage agreement still being worked on, I've relied on Julianne's clear-eyed outline of [what to know about the deal]( and what to expect next. Hoping that all of this might provide some nourishing food for thought before the main event. âInae Oh Advertisement [House Bookshop Ad]( [Top Story] [Top Story]( [What to Know About the Hostage Deal Between Israel and Hamas]( The freed hostages will likely include at least three Americansâtwo women and a childâNational Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said.
