Farewell to a rare and very good corner of the internet

Maybe it was that stint on the high school newspaper. Or maybe I secretly harbored an interest in defying my parents, who have always been confused by the concept of a career in writing, and only recently stopped suggesting I find something else to do with my life. But somehow, I ended up working here, in journalism, where the privilege of reading and writing for money is not lost on me—even if that money isn't much. ([Support Mother Jones! Do it here!]() So in 2007, smack in the middle of college, it was something of a thrill to discover Jezebel. The website felt genuinely radical at the time. And not just because of the politics and caustic headlines. As a young woman with vague ideas of being a writer, Jezebel was one of the earliest corners of the internet that I immediately wanted to be a part of. Learn its voice. Share with my friends. Be the type of woman-adult-person who also cared about the issues Jezebel editors appeared to care about. It's not exactly a surprise that [Jezebel is officially shutting down]( today. After all, the media is such a miserable, soul-crushing landscape. But the end of a trailblazing feminist website that invariably left you both enraged and laughing is still a gut punch. That's especially true as I reflect on how the writing shaped my own voice and attitudes about a world that so frequently disappoints. The world is burning. Twitter sucks. We still have to talk about Donald Trump. Yeah, it can feel as if we're sleepwalking from disaster to disaster these days. I'm just grateful to have experienced corners of the internet, that at one point or another, truly felt like a respite.
