The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter](     October 13, 2023 Hi y’all, It’s Katie Herchenroeder, a fellow here at Mother Jones, and I want to tell you what I’ve been reading lately: I started the week reading Arianna Coghill and nia t. evans’ [interview]( with Dr. Bettina Love, a professor of education at Columbia University and author of [Punished for Dreaming: How School Reform Harms Black Children and How We Heal](. They spoke with Dr. Love about the CROWN Act, a state law that prohibits race-based hair discrimination in schools, housing, and workplaces, and how Black kids and their joy are being systematically silenced and sidelined in America’s schools. "It’s important to note this story isn’t just about hair," Dr. Love told them. "It’s about anti-Blackness. Black people’s hair is such an important symbol of our identity. It’s about who we are and how we express ourselves." That quote stuck with me as I read [Arianna's update on one of the students](, Darryl George, referenced in her conversation with Dr. Love after George was suspended in August over his dreadlocks. In a shocking move, the high school has now [removed George and transferred him]( to an alternative disciplinary program. As a spokesperson for the George family described the situation, "The racism is being shown." I urge you to read my colleagues' piece on the pernicious effects of these policies, and [how the surveillance of Black hair damages the spirit](. —Katie Herchenroeder Advertisement [CREDO Mobile]( [Top Story] [Top Story]( [An Alleged Foreign Agent Is Serving on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee]( Sen.
