The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter](     September 28, 2023 My 2023 bingo card did not have Mike Pence defending Joe Biden's sex life and comparing it to his own. But here we are, thanks to last night's second GOP primary debate. The incident arrived after Chris Christie took a shot at the president's [visit to the UAW picket line]( this week, only to take a swipe at first lady Jill Biden, who for decades has worked as a teacher. "When you have the president of the United States sleeping with a member of the teachers union, there is no chance that you could take the stranglehold away from the teachers union every day," the former New Jersey governor said. "They have an advocate inside the White House every day for the worst of their teachers, not for our students to be the best they can be." The attack, [which was blasted as misogynistic](, prompted Pence to tell the audience that he, too, sleeps with his wife, also a teacher. "Chris, you mentioned the president's situation. My wife isn't a member of the teachers union but I got to admit I've been sleeping with a teacher for 38 years—full disclosure," he said. That was genuinely one of the most awkward moments from last night's debate, which otherwise featured draconian remarks on immigration and Tim Scott insisting that cutting taxes will save child care. (As my colleague Abby Vesoulis [wrote](, the assertion is absurd—and does nothing to fix the fact that our already broken child care system is about to [fall off a cliff at the end of the month](.) The whole thing, but especially Pence's wife comments, could pretty much be summed up with Nikki Haley telling Vivek Ramaswamy, "[Every time I hear you, I feel a little bit dumber](." —Henry Carnell Advertisement [Hope Credit Union]( [Top Story] [Top Story]( [No, Tim Scott: Cutting Taxes Won’t Fix America’s Child Care Crisis]( 70,000 child care centers could close after pandemic funding ends on September 30.
