The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter](     September 13, 2023 In the [latest disappointing celeb news](, Drew Barrymore decided to cross the picket line. The Drew Barrymore Show’s writers are [protesting]( their own host for her decision to continue production amid the ongoing strikes. Today, my colleague Arianna Coghill [reports]( on what’s happened since the show resumed, and the consequences Barrymore is facing––including being dropped as the host for the National Book Foundation’s upcoming awards ceremony. “I wonder how she’s doing in her affirmation closet today,” Coghill aptly quips. In a [statement]( released on Instagram, Barrymore affirmed that she took this step “to start season 4 once again with an astute humility.” The comments on Barrymore’s post are littered with people calling her a “Scab.” A scab, as Indigo Olivier recently [explained]( in Teen Vogue, is a “worker who crosses a picket line in violation of a planned work stoppage or strike and it’s the most contemptuous term that could be leveled against you within the labor movement.” The lifelong actor’s choice to cross the picket line comes as WGA and SAG-AFTRA members have been striking for [over 100 days](. They have been in a bitter [fight]( with executives for better working conditions, including increased pay and contractual protections related to the use of artificial intelligence. As Coghill makes note of, fans and Hollywood workers, including the writers employed by Barrymore, have been picketing outside the show’s New York studio since Monday––with no plans to stop until the host halts production. “The reality is,” Cristina Kinon, a writer who has worked with Barrymore since the show’s pilot episode, [said](, “you stand with the unions, or you don’t.” —Katie Herchenroeder Advertisement [CREDO Mobile: Better for all people and the planet. ]( [Top Story] [Top Story]( [Drew Barrymore’s Newest Role: Scab]( I wonder how she's doing in her affirmation closet today.
