I want to talk to you about seaweed. Seaweed is the one food, as I discussed with a circle of partygoers this past weekend, that I despise yet want to grow to really love one day. After all, my friends love it and the packaging is often very cute. It's an endeavor I'm actively working on. One recent attempt led me to a pack of [Trader Joe’s]( "Roasted Seaweed with Sea Salt." But even as I ripped open the package and crunched down on one of the neatly rowed sheets, I couldn't figure out the hype. Why did my people love this salty marine algae? Why is it featured prominently in their favorite meals? What am I missing here? It’s as if my colleague Jackie Flynn Mogensen had been reading my mind. I awoke today to read her latest piece, "[Can Eating Seaweed Help the Climate Crisis?"]( which delves into how seaweed is seemingly taking over the culinary world—and my friends' palates. But it isn't just a new trend. In her reporting, Jackie found that seaweed can help [reduce ocean acidification]( and may even [dramatically cut down]( on methane. As one source told her, “It’s good for the body and good for the planet." He also noted, "And it’s delicious”––a sentiment I am hoping to someday agree with. So should we all be eating more seaweed?
