The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter]( June 15, 2023 Hi, this is Ruth Murai, research editor here at Mother Jones. Seven years after his infamous Access Hollywood tape surfaced, a federal jury last month found Donald Trump [liable]( for sexually abusing and defaming the writer E. Jean Carroll. The moment felt emblematic of the legacy of MeToo: one of the most powerful men in the country was finally held accountable for his abuse. But what happened the next day, when Trump [mocked]( Carroll on live television, to the apparent delight of the audience, prompted a similar reflection. Was this also emblematic of MeTooâs legacy, the backlash, and the comebacks that have emerged? As a former producer who worked on documentaries on sexual violence, I've been fascinated by MeToo stories. And the movement has inspired so many questions: Has real change taken root? What's next? Have the lives of survivors benefited? As the fifth anniversary of the movement's explosion passed last fall, we started to reach out to people whoâve had their lives in some way changed by this era to ask them to reflect, in the hopes that their stories would give us a new understanding of MeToo's legacy. Today, [weâre sharing those stories with you](. Thereâs the [young survivor]( who wrote a letter and started a movement that shook her wealthy Bay Area community. A [student journalist]( who wrote about a TikTokkerâs toxic masculinity, only to have his followers turn on her. The [incarcerated woman]( who thinks MeToo, had it come earlier, mightâve changed the trajectory of her life. I hope that reading them, alongside some [other]( [reporting]( weâve done on the cultural impact of MeToo, will answer some of your questions about the movement. âRuth Murai P.S. During the first of Donald Trumpâs impeachments, 52 Republican senators created a beehive mentality and spouted enough nonsense to allow such a U.S. President to become a repeat offender. Only an unruly stable considers this type of man a genius. For historical purposes, we made [a deck of cards]( to prove that they did.
