The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter]( April 11, 2023 Hi! It's James West, deputy editor at Mother Jones. I'm writing today because we recently won a major journalism award, and I haven't had a chance to share the fantastic news or express my gratitude for your [unwavering support](. Two weeks ago, our documentary "[She Never Hurt Her Kids. So Why Is She in Prison?](" earned the prestigious National Magazine Award for Video. Think of it as the Oscars of the magazine world, but somehow even more delightfully nerdy than that sounds. I couldn't be prouder. You can catch a glimpse of our overjoyed MoJo team at the Manhattan ceremony in this photo [I shared on my Twitter feed](, celebrating the win. The film, directed, edited, and produced by Mark Helenowski, is based on senior reporter Samantha Michaels' [yearlong investigation]( into Oklahoma's "failure to protect" laws and the story of incarcerated mom Kerry King. Samantha and data journalist Ryan Little [analyzed]( 1.5 million cases, revealing that many of those incarcerated were women, particularly survivors of domestic violence. Black moms were disproportionately targeted. Our team, including Samantha's editor Maddie Oatman, knew we wanted to create a documentary about the impact of these laws on families, so Mark, a seasoned filmmaker, got to work combining stunning field interviews with dozens of hours of archive and trial audio to bring the story to life. We don't do journalism for awards, of course, but winning among such stellar competitionâincluding Insider, the New Yorker, Eater, and Cook's Illustratedâis touching and rewarding. This project exemplifies the impact that our scrappy, reader-supported newsroom can make by dedicating limited resources to issues we deeply care about. As we wrap up our condensed fundraising campaign ([more on that here](), we still need $105,000 to come in. So, I'd like to encourage you to support Mother Jones [right now](. I love my job because it allows me to collaborate with talented reporters, editors, and producers. Our small, dedicated team continues to achieve great things, like recently becoming finalists for a 2023 Webby Award for our wide-ranging work in video. (You can vote for us in the Peopleâs Voice section [here](.) [We couldnât do this work without you](, and weâre all so grateful that this is the type of journalism you expect from us. âJames West Advertisement [T-shirts, and books, and back issues, oh my!]( [Top Story] [Top Story]( [She Never Hurt Her Kids. BY MAGGIE DUFFY AND MADISON PAULY [Fiercely Independent] The next few months are make-or-break for Mother Jones' fundraising. We need to raise $300,000 quickly, and we need more online readers to [pitch in]( than have been. You can read more in "[It's Not a Crisis. This Is the New Normal](," where we go into the brutal economics of journalism, and why a strong base of support from readers is the only way we can do the in-depth reporting you get from us. If you can right now, please pitch in and help us do it. [Donate]( Did you enjoy this newsletter? Help us out by [forwarding]( it to a friend or sharing it on [Facebook]( and [Twitter](.
