The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter]( April 7, 2023 Heading into this week, Donald Trump's surrender appeared set to dominate the news. And in some respects, it did, as it should have; the arrest of a former president is indeed a historic occasion. But so too did other matters. In Wisconsin, [where a liberal judge defeated a MAGA candidate]( to deliver progressives their first majority on the state Supreme Court since 2008, the deep ramifications, both in a state where the GOP has relentlessly worked to erode democracy for more than a decade, and on the national stage, cannot be overstated. As my colleague Madison Pauly notes, the progressive victory in Wisconsin also proved once again that [abortion rights are a winning issue](. Then in Nashville, we saw the [extraordinary expulsion of two Democratic lawmakers](, both of them Black men, after their participation in a gun control rally from the chamber floor. That protest, a response to a mass shooting at a Nashville grade school, also included Rep. Gloria Johnson, who narrowly escaped a vote to determine her ouster. "It might have to do with the color of our skin," Johnson replied when asked why she was spared expulsion. My colleague Garrison Hayes was all over the scene in Nashville, where he landed [an exclusive interview with Johnson]( ahead of the dramatic vote. I highly recommend you watch, as well as check out [Hayes' remarkable photos](. All of which is to say that Donald Trump, as important as he is to the political conversation, doesn't have to saturate everything. There is so much at stake all around the countryâand Mother Jones is committed to covering the truth and bringing some moral clarity to the mess. That's our bread and butter!
