The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter]( January 6, 2023 Do you remember exactly where you were when the news broke about the insurrection? I was working from home for another publication, waiting for edits on a story that immediately became unimportant for obvious reasons. As footage emerged of at least a dozen sweaty guys carrying a giant crucifix across the Capitol lawn, my Slack notifications started to light up. There's not much that I can add to what's already been said about the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. Since that day of unprecedented violence, Mother Jones has relentlessly investigated the buildup that fueled the attempt to overthrow American democracy and its far-reaching [effects](. And our coverage continues today. My colleague Garrison Hayes and essayist Anthony Conwright recently teamed up for this groundbreaking [video](, exploring the role that white grievance played in motivating the rioters. Senior reporter Tim Murphy also has an excellent [piece]( tracking the companies that have reneged on their promises to stop funding election-denying candidates. But the story that really stuck with me was Stephanie Mencimer's deep dive into [AMPFest](, the right-wing conference that served as an "underappreciated incubator for the events of Jan. 6." An expert on all things MAGA, Mencimer writes this week: In hindsight, AMPFests turned out to be an underappreciated incubator for the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol: It provided a platform ([and speaking fees)]( for a melting pot of prominent far-right agitators, former Trump administration officials, and disgraced MAGA politicians, not to mention a networking opportunity for disparate elements of Trumpism that previously existed mostly online. And AMPFest was perhaps the first big conference of the Trump era to offer a safe space for QAnon believers and other conspiracy theorists, white nationalists, election deniers, anti-vaxxers, the alt-right, Christian nationalist pastors, and political criminals pardoned by Trump all while giving them a chance to rub shoulders with establishment Republican politicians. âIn 2019, [AMPFest] was kind of dismissed as a meeting of the fringe,â says Kristen Doerer, managing editor of Right Wing Watchâfrom the liberal nonprofit People for the American Wayâwho attended the event. âBut there were also a number of MAGA Republicans who had close ties to the White House, like Don. Jr., or were in the White House itself. It really lent this conference legitimacy and also empowered these far-right figures to keep on doing what they were doing. A lot of the same characters that we saw at AMPFest in 2019 are the same ones that came together in 2020 for âStop the Steal.ââ If you want a story that is equal parts fascinating, informative, and horrifying, I'd definitely give this piece a read. âArianna Coghill Advertisement [UC Press]( [Top Story] [Top Story]( [The Rise and Fall of Stop the Steal’s Favorite Conference]( AMPFest was a place for MAGA diehards kicked out of traditional conservative conferences.
