A matching gift, an unmatched community.   [Mother Jones]( MoJo Reader, I've always been someone who looks for silver linings, and I have two of them to share with you today. Though it was always clear that this economically uncertain year would be a tough one for Mother Jones and other news organizations, I wouldn't have predicted our fall fundraising push struggling quite like [it has](. But I also wouldn't have predicted that a longtime friend of Mother Jones would step up and pledge an incredibly generous gift—one they hope will inspire giving from the Mother Jones community for a moment just like this. Here's how: Starting now, and for one week only, all online donations will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $94,000 total, so we can finish off our fall campaign the best we possibly can. If you're able to, please help us make the most of this opportunity and [support Mother Jones when your donation will go twice as far]( before the Wednesday, November 9 deadline. That's one hell of a silver lining: A donor who trusts others will step up if they do, and is willing to go big so their gift, and yours, can have twice the impact by [doubling donations from our online community](. That's huge, and so needed right now: If we can hit that $94,000 match over the next week, we'll be in a less scary place than I feared a few weeks ago. The other silver lining? It's wild and I would have never imagined this either, but it has been so encouraging seeing how the Mother Jones community has responded to the questions [we asked](—sharing what you are going through, why journalism matters to you, what ideas and questions you have about our work. The emails I've sent asking for donations based on what you shared have raised way more than the emails I typically write about the urgent stakes of everything and deep dives into our reporting, which tells me the human-to-human connection is as important and powerful as our journalism is right now. And that this unknown space into which I send these emails—never knowing who will read or respond—truly is a community. A community of people who all have so damn much going on in our lives, but who care about other people's lives, and care about Mother Jones' mission. I'm so grateful to have seen that in action, because when times are tough, community can help each of us get through the challenges we face. So once again, I'll let two voices from the MoJo community make the case to [support our work while we have a matching gift and all online donations will be doubled]( through Wednesday, November 9. "Why I support your work? Mother Jones focuses on the problems of today, while connecting them to the bad decisions, or good, of the past. It holds no punches, it dives deep into the facts of the story, and most importantly, your journalists are timely in delivering the story weeks sometimes months ahead of others. This is your strength, and this is what you need to advertise to your readers and future readers. We make better decisions, vote for better candidates when we have the knowledge ahead of time, and not just whatever is the popular news cycle of the day/week." "Perhaps recognize that even small donations add up. Ten folks giving $20 is better than nothing. We are being squeezed to help others, while trying to meet our own basic needs, often on fixed incomes." Hear, hear. [Monika] Monika Bauerlein, CEO Mother Jones P.S. There are many of you who truly can't donate right now, and I understand and respect that. Thanks for your notes and for sharing your thoughts as we raise the money it takes to make this all possible.
