It's been a wild week. But I'll only be thinking about one announcement in the days to come.

The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter](     August 12, 2022 Hey everyone! Happy Friday! This week, to put it mildly, was wild. Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago [was]( searched by the FBI. Beto O’Rourke [cussed]( out a heckler. Republicans and the right-wing echo chamber [debuted a new scare tactic](. But the one event that I really can’t get off my mind is [Angela Yee's surprise departure]( from hosting "The Breakfast Club." For those not in the know, "The Breakfast Club" isn't a group of people talking about the [hit coming-of-age film](. It’s a radio show that covers celebrity gossip and pop culture hosted by the aforementioned Yee, Charlamagne tha God, and DJ Envy. The show has been problematic, to say the least. To say the most, it’s been a hotbed of [misogyny](, [rape apology,]( and [queerphobia](. But the show has long held an interesting place in Black internet history. On a monthly basis, clips and screenshots from the show go viral, becoming embedded in Black Twitter’s meme lexicon. But Yee's announcement raised an interesting question: should the show still be on the air at all? For every hilarious clip, there’s always one reprehensible one following close behind. Sure, that [one clip of rapper Soulja Boi]( repeatedly calling Drake’s name was funny. Who could forget when then-presidential candidate Joe Biden [told Charlamagne tha God]( that Black Trump supporters "ain’t Black"? But this is also the same place that [asked]( the members of a teen boy band whether or not they were having sex. Must we uphold a show that allows rape culture, sexism, and homophobia to thrive? Sure, the memes were memorable and will be forever cemented in Black Twitter history. But it's my thinking that "The Breakfast Club" should bow out. -Arianna Coghill Advertisement [House Subscriptions Ad]( [Top Story] [Top Story]( [No, the IRS is not hiring 87,000 new agents to go after ordinary taxpayers.]( But wealthy tax cheats may have to watch their backs.
