[View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter](     April 19, 2022 Believe it or not, [this Politico article]( about why Sarah Palin might win a congressional seat kind of made me want to move to Alaska. Sarah Palin has worn a lot of hats: governor, vice presidential hopeful, "The Masked Singer" contestant, [anti-New York Times litigant](. Now, she's vying to become Alaska's lone representative in Congress, and, well, she definitely has a chance. Maybe. You see, she's got some stiff competition from 47 other candidates, including a monk from North Pole, Alaska, who is literally named [Santa Claus](. In the words of a conservative talk show host, "We know [on] ‘Saturday Night Live,’ you’re going to have Santa Claus debating Sarah Palin. It’s going to happen, and it’s going to be, probably, funny.” You hear that, Tina Fey? Palin's most serious competitor might be Nick Begich III, a Republican who hails from an Alaskan Democratic political dynasty. Begich seems to have [self-funded]( most of his $1 million congressional campaign, and he hasn't topped more than 200 followers on Twitter or Instagram. (Not that that's the most accurate public opinion metric.) At the end of the day, as ludicrous as a Sarah Palin run may seem, she's a scandalous, interesting person who is reentering politics at a time when many politicians have staked their power on being, well, scandalous and interesting. Said one former state Republican lawmaker: "Our state is goofy as shit." Goofy enough to elect Sarah Palin? That remains to be seen. —Abigail Weinberg Advertisement [UC Press - Alagona]( [Top Story] [Top Story]( [Climate Change Is Making Jobs Deadlier—and OSHA Can’t Take the Heat]( Conservatives have gutted America's workplace watchdog.
