[View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter](     April 15, 2022 It's been exactly nine years since Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev detonated two pressure cooker bombs near the finish line of the Boston marathon, killing three people—29-year-old Krystle Campbell, 23-year-old Lingzi Lu, and 8-year-old Martin Richard—and injuring hundreds of others. Shortly after, the brothers also shot MIT police officer Sean Collier as they tried to evade an unprecedented manhunt that culminated in a shootout on the streets of Watertown, Massachusetts, during which Tamerlan was killed. Dzhokhar has been sentenced to death for his crimes. It was doubly disconcerting, then, that the anniversary week of the bombing was marked by another act of senseless violence—in this case, a shooting on the New York subway—followed by a citywide manhunt. Though it's still deeply dispiriting that sporadic mass killings have become part of the background noise of American life, it's also inspiring that cities have a way of pulling together during times of strife. The bombings brought out the [best]( of [Boston](, much as the Subway shootings brought out the [best]( of New York City, and in the years following, Boston has begun to observe a [day of remembrance](, where city-dwellers are encouraged to perform random acts of kindness to one another. To me at least, that seems as good a way of memorializing a tragedy as any. – Noah Y. Kim P.S. Before packing it in for the weekend, I also wanted to boost our fundraising campaign that kicked off earlier this week. In “[Their Fight Is Our Fight](,” MoJo’s Monika Bauerlein looks at what’s happening in Ukraine and Russia through the lens of a Great Information War, and that hits home for me as someone who wades through the day's headlines in putting together this newsletter for you all. She also shares a few recent examples of just how powerful independent, reader-supported journalism is to counter it right now—so I hope you’ll give it a read today or this weekend and, if you can, that you’ll [consider pitching in to help make our reporting as strong as it can be](.
